Flora Vilches is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Universidad de Chile. Her research focuses on the material world of the recent past and its representational forms. She is interested in the timeframe of the capitalist industrial expansion in Chile, from the late 19th Century onwards, which coincides with the academic origins of anthropology and archaeology, the establishment of National museums around the world, and the representation of “the other” in the Northwestern Hemisphere. She recently completed a project (2008–2011) financed by FONDECYT (the National Science and Technology Research Fund), on the saltpetre industry in northern Chile and has another one underway (2012–2016), on small industries associated with saltpetre and copper mining. Both projects involve a multidisciplinary team in the areas of archaeology, ethnography, history and architecture to undertake fieldwork and lab work.
