Melanie Nguyen is a first year MA/PhD student studying contemporary art with Dr. Joshua Shannon. Her interests include ecocriticism, theory, and urbanism in the contemporary period. She received a bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) in Art History with a minor in French from St. Louis University in 2013. Her senior thesis, “Cross-Pollination: Félix Guattari and the Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary,” analyzed the work of Juan William Chávez, an artist who aims to recover blighted urban areas using socially-minded programming that promotes environmental sustainability. Prior to enrolling at the University of Maryland, she worked as the Assistant to the Director at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.
