Michael Vetter is a fifth-year graduate student in the Department of Art History at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he specializes in American art of the interwar period. He defended his MA thesis, titled "To Make a (Metaphysical) World: The 'Return to Order' in George Ault's Late Paintings," in October 2012. He is currently in the process of beginning his dissertation, which will focus on American documentary photography and social realist painting in the 1930s. Michael has been a research assistant in in the curatorial department at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. since the fall of 2013, and is currently working there as a University of Maryland Museum Fellow for the 2014-2015 academic year. At the Hirshhorn, he has assisted in research and writing preparations for the reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection, and is currently working on an exhibition of work by the California Light and Space artist Robert Irwin.
