Last year the National Gallery of Art unveiled the first volume of the Online Edition of the Systematic Catalog of the museum's collections, Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century. The choice of this volume to publish digitally was quite appropriate, as it always has enjoyed a reputation for excellent scholarship and accessibility in its writing. Its author, Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., valued member of the faculty here at Maryland and Curator of Northern Baroque Paintings at the Gallery, also has a reputation for trying new modes of research and scholarship, always with success. So perhaps it is not surprising that in an article in today's New York Times that this venture should be featured prominently in an article surveying the digital construction and transformation underway at many of the world's most promiment museums. We should note, as well, the mention of a digital resource, the Vatican's online Sistine Chapel (a high-resolution QTVR) that we feel with some pride is seen to particular advantage in the Collaboratory (1:53 mark).
