Deborah Down, or Debbie as everyone knows her, is a true nexus within the department. Whether it be the administration of the foreign language exams and written exams for graduate students to overenrolling that one undergraduate who just has to have a course (after the teacher's permission has been secured) to facilitating the faculty's semiannual discussions of graduate students's progress to making many of the arrangements for Middle Atlantic Symposium and graduation, Debbie is the vital cog that keeps our department's gears moving smoothly. Most important, however, is her welcoming smile and attentive listening, particularly for applicants to the graduate program for whom Debbie is often the first contact. A better first impression one cannot imagine. Debbie is a certified notary of the public, a service that can come in quite handy at times in the department.
When away from the office, Debbie enjoys time at the beach, long walks, going new places, going out for dinner and enjoying fine spirits with good people. She loves animals (check out the turtles in her office), especially her own. She wishes she could have about 4 more little dogs.
