From Ottoman Turkey to modern Japan, from the steppes of Mongolia to the islands of Indonesia, we will examine key sacred sites, monuments, and images of the continent’s major belief systems, including Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. We will also explore how art reveals Asia’s changing place in the world through cross-cultural exchange both at home and around the globe. We will learn how art can shore up politics and power, preserve traditions amidst chaos, fuel the rise and fall of some of the world’s greatest dynasties and empires, and even incite revolutionary change. This lecture-based course will be conducted entirely online.
