Newly-minted Dr. Amanda Chen leads 6 UMD students on a once-in-a-lifetime excavation opportunity in Italy!

At the close of the month of May, with graduation ceremonies still looming large in the rearview mirror, Amanda Chen - fresh off earning her hooding as Doctor of Philosophy in the History and Archaeology of Art - stepped on a plane to return to Orvieto, Italy. After a two years hiatus due to pandemic restrictions Amanda once again looks to pick of the spade and other tools of the field archaeologist and resume work at the excavations in Orvieto and the nearby village of Corigilia, just as she already has done for four years.

What's different this time around is that Amanda, that is, Dr. Chen, is leading a sizable group of six UMD Terps on their first ever dig. The ongoing project, which is operated by St. Anselm College out of Manchester, New Hampshire, promises to serve up fascinating discoveries and plenty of hard work! Oh, and also those views

Congratulations to the UMD Orvieto/Coriglia excavation crew. Do us proud!
