Amanda K. Chen studied Roman art and archaeology with Dr. Maryl B. Gensheimer. Her dissertation examines images of and within Roman doorways in early Imperial-era south Italy. The dissertation combines an experiential approach with an in-depth analysis of the painting, mosaic, and architecture of portals to unpack the visual experience of Roman doorways as space and symbol. She served as the Undergraduate Career Advisor in the Department of Art History and Archaeology for the 2021-2022 academic year, and served as Editorial Assistant for Art Journal from 2018-2021.
Amanda earned her BA in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed her Master's degree at UMD with a thesis entitled "Identity, Immortality, Interaction: Female Funerary Monuments as Sites of Identity Building in the Roman Empire," which explored constructions of female identity through funerary monuments in Rome and Pompeii. She has worked as the Assistant Curator and Getty Curatorial Intern at the Banning Museum, in the Archeology Department of the National Park Service, as the Academic Programs Intern at the Hammer Museum, and within the Education Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Dr. Chen moved to the Kansas City Art Institute in the fall 2022 as Assistant Professor of Ancient Roman Art.
