Haojian Cheng is a PhD student studying Chinese art with Professor Jason C. Kuo. He holds a Bachelor of Science in both Art History and Computer Science from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on Chinese art from the late Ming and Qing dynasties of the early modern period, especially archaistic paintings, calligraphy, and bronzes. He also uses his computer science background to develop digital tools that compare artworks across different time periods and materials.
Haojian earned his M.A. in Art History and Archaeology from the University of Maryland in May 2024. His master's thesis, entitled "Zhang Daqian's Landscape Painting Style in the Taiwanese Period (1976–1983)," looks at a unique phase in this important Chinese artist's career, when he created a remarkable fusion of styles.
