Magdalena Mastrandrea

Magdalena (Maggie) Mastrandrea is a Ph.D. Candidate studying modern Japanese art under the guidance of Professor Alicia Volk. She holds a BA in Art History from Loyola University Chicago and a MA in Art History from UMD. Her dissertation research focuses on nihonga, a neo-traditional painting genre developed in modern Japan, and mid-20 th century nihonga painters’ engagement with the avant-garde. 

From 2022-2023 academic year, Maggie worked at the Gordon W. Prange Collection of Postwar Japanese Archives at the University of Maryland, where she co-curated the exhibition “Fuji: Mountain as Metaphor”. She spent the 2025-2026 academic year in Osaka, Japan, studying Japanese language and developing her dissertation research with a grant provided by the Japan Foundation.
