GAHA Distinguished Lecture: Dr. An-Yi Pan, "Embattled Modernity - Postwar Modern Art in Taiwan"

Art History and Archaeology Thursday, September 25, 2025 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Parren J. Mitchell Art/Sociology Building, 2203

The Graduate Art History Association (GAHA) is please to announce this year's Distinguished Lecturer.

An-Yi Pan is Professor of Chinese Art History at Cornell University. His research interests include the intersections of Buddhist religious practices and visual culture, as well as modern and contemporary Taiwanese art. Dr. Pan has curated several exhibitions of contemporary Taiwanese art at the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell. His forthcoming book, Embattled Modernity: Postwar Taiwanese Art, investigates key issues and debates in Taiwanese art during the two decades following World War II.

In his lecture at UMD, Dr. Pan will introduce us to one of these debates: the tensions between “left” and “right” art during a pivotal and complex period in Taiwan's history. After the end of Japanese colonial rule and the establishment of Nationalist Party governance, how did the visual arts reflect the era’s social unrest and political upheaval?

Light refreshments will be served from 4:30 pm in the Atrium of Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building.
