Immersing Ourselves in the Spaces and Stories of Black Education in the Reconstruction Era - A Freedmen's Bureau Event

Art History and Archaeology Wednesday, April 20, 2022 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Parren J. Mitchell Art/Sociology Building, 4213A Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture

Join us in the Collaboratory for a special (and spatial) visit to Hosanna Freedmen's School in Harford County and related spaces throughout Maryland in an immersive experience where one is free to wander and explore all parts of the school while enjoying the benefits of continued telepresence with other attendees. Dr. Christopher Bonner (UMD, History) will present the historical context for African American Education & Citizenship rights in the Era of Reconstruction and Dr. Iris Barnes (Dir., Hosanna Freedmen's School) will tell the story of Hosanna School Museum and its first teacher, Miss Edmonia Highgate. As well, officials from the National Museum of African American History and Culture will be on hand virtually to provide rich context for how such Freedmen's schools came to be, stories that are found in the records of the Freedmen's Bureau. It promises to be a memorable program and experience, so do come, and take your turn exploring the spaces while you enjoy the program! Snacks will be provided!
