Middle Atlantic Symposium, Keynote Lecture: Dr. Gerardo Mosquera, "Brazil: Disarranging Concretism"
The Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Maryland and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art have jointly sponsored the Middle Atlantic Symposium in the History of Art since 1971. The Symposium offers an opportunity not only for advanced graduate students to present their research to the public, but also to bring together the academic and museum communities in the greater Washington area.
Participating institutions are American University, Bryn Mawr College, Duke University, Emory University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, the Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, the University of Delaware, the University of North Carolina, the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, and Virginia Commonwealth University, seven of which join the University of Maryland to form each year's cohort.
The 50th Annual Sessions of the Symposium will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 6th and 7th, 2020, and will begin with a tea in the Atrium of the Art/Sociology Building at the University of Maryland at 5 pm on Friday, followed at 6 pm with the George Levitine Lecture. Dr. Gerardo Mosquera, an independent curator, critic, historian, and writer, will deliver his lecture "Brazil: Disarranging Concretism." Based in Havana and Madrid, Dr. Mosquera is advisor to the Rijksakademie van Beeldenden Kunsten, Amsterdam, and member of the advisory board of several international art centers and journals. He was co-founder of the Havana Biennial, Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, Artistic Director of PHotoESPAÑA, Madrid, and has curated many biennials and international exhibitions around the world, most recently the 21st Paiz Art Biennial, Guatemala, and Useless. Machines for Dreaming, Thinking and Seeing, Bronx Museum, New York. Author of numerous books and texts on contemporary art and art theory, his last book has appeared in Chinese in Beijing, where he recently co-curated the 3rd edition of Today Documents for the Today Art Museum. He has received the Guggenheim Fellowship.
Dr. Mosquera's lecture will be followed by a dinner (by subscription). Students will present their papers the following day at the National Gallery of Art, where the Symposium will conclude with a reception.
