Prof. Bridget Buxton to Speak On King Herod's Harbor in Caesarea Maritima
The Department of Classics, the Department of Art History and Archaeology, and the Washington, DC Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, are pleased to present the Anna Marguerite McCann and Robert D. Taggart Lecture in Underwater Archaeology.
Prof. Bridget Buxton of the University of Rhode Island will be presenting a lecture entitled "New Light on King Herod's Harbor (Caesarea Maritima)".
Abstract of the lecture: "Caesarea Maritima was a major eastern Mediterranean port city in antiquity, long the subject of University of Maryland excavations and research. It was significantly enlarged in the Roman period by the client king Herod I, who established a new harbor and dedicated the town and its port to Caesar Augustus. Noted underwater archaeologist, Dr. Bridget Buxton, will discuss new excavations at King Herod’s harbor that have transformed our understanding of one of the ancient world's greatest engineering achievements."
The lecture will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, November 8, in Marie Mount Hall, Room 1400, in the University of Maryland. There will be a pre-lecture reception with light refreshments at 6:30 pm.
The event is free and open to the public. Please join us!
