University of Maryland Art Gallery Exhibition Opening: Re•Cast: Sculptural works from the Art Museum of the Americas

Art History and Archaeology Thursday, September 8, 2022 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Parren J. Mitchell Art/Sociology Building, 2022

A major part of the NextNow Fest focus of art spaces in the Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building on Thursday, September 8th, the University of Maryland Art Gallery will open its doors 5-7 pm for celebration of its fall exhibitions, which are headlined by Re•Cast: Sculptural works from the Art Museum of the Americas, an exhibition curated by Dr. Abigail McEwen and students from this past spring's seminar, including Marco Polo Juárez, Gabrielle Robinson-Tillenburg, Cléa Massiani, and Maggie Mastrandrea. This beautiful exhibition, an exploration of the AMA collection's sculptural works, including some rarely seen pieces from the vault, emphasizes accessibility of experience. With audio narratives available in English, French, and Spanish, and (coming) haptic 3-D fabrications of key pieces for the unsighted to experience via touch, the curators are welcoming far more communities than typically might come to an UMD Art Gallery exhibition.

A portion of the UMD Art Gallery also holds space as a memoriam for W.C. "Chip" Richardson by displaying a few of his works. His recent passing has shaken the community in our building and this small exhibition of his work offers visitors a chance to appreciate his artistic talent, even as they mourn the loss of his gregarious, humanistic presence in the building.

Finally, be sure and check out VitA (Video in the Atrium), a new mode of exhibition programming offered by the Art Gallery. Melanie Nguyen and Taras Matla have worked tirelessly to get this space activated, and doubtless the results will be quite wonderful.
