Jamison Heckrotte, Recipient of the 2024–2025 Mark H. Sandler Award, Participates in Coriglia Excavation in Orvieto
Heckrotte traveled over the summer to the small Umbria town of Orvieto to participate in the
Coriglia Excavation projects 2025 season. With the goal of pursuing graduate programs in
classical archaeology, Jamison jumped at the opportunity to attend an archaeological field
school directed by University of Maryland Alumni, Amanda Chen. While staying in Orvieto,
Jamison worked on the dig on weekdays, assigned to work under Will Ramundt, assistant
director of the dig. Under Will’s supervision, she worked with a small group of other students on
the dig to excavate and analyze what appears to be an ancient trash pit, unearthing artifacts
that revealed information about the other areas of the site. When not on the site, Jamison was
able to explore famous archaeological sites of Italy, such as Pompeii and the Roman Forum with
friends made on the dig. Jamison hopes to return for another season after having solidified her
love for archaeological fieldwork in the 2025 season. She has larger aspirations to pursue
archaeology and professorship post-undergrad. In the meantime, Jamison is double majoring in
Studio Art and Art History & Archaeology.
