San Vitale a Particular Favorite from Dr. Georgievska-Shine's Byzantine Class

Art History & Archaeology majors Lily Hemmeter (Class of 2027) and Kathleen Quintana (Class of 2027) are currently studying abroad in Florence, Italy, and recently had the opportunity to visit Ravenna to see the Byzantine churches & mosaics that they studied in Professor Georgievska-Shine's ARTH313: Medieval Art: Cultural Exchanges in the Byzantine World course. They visited the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of Apollinare Nuovo, and the Baptistery of Neoniano. Lily and Kathleen also had the chance to speak to a mosaicist and see first-hand what a mosaic workshop looks like! Both students are thoroughly enjoying the experiential learning that comes with studying abroad, as well as the opportunity to see the works they have studied first-hand. They thank Professor Georgievska-Shine for introducing them to the Byzantine world and to such inspiring works of art.
