Grant Allows Dr. Egan to Study Unpublished Wall Paintings from the Palace at Pylos in Greece this Summer
ARTH Professor Emily Egan is one of this year’s recipients of a grant from the Richard C. MacDonald Iliad Endowment for Archaeological Research, awarded by the Archaeological Institute of America. Dr. Egan will use the award to examine the unpublished wall paintings from the “Palace of Nestor” at Pylos, Greece in order to craft a more complete history of Mycenaean painting and to contextualize the descriptions of wall decoration offered in Homer’s Odyssey. This work, which she will undertake this summer in collaboration with Dr. Chris Cloke, Associate Director of the ARTH Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture, blends traditional study methods (e.g., cataloguing and hand-drawn illustration) with new uses of two high-impact digital technologies: photogrammetry and reflectance-transformation imaging (RTI) to reveal ancient painting practices, create novel interactive reconstructions, and facilitate off-site material study.
Congratulations Dr. Egan!
