Sandler Awardee Lily Hemmeter travels to Italy

Recipient of The 2023-2024 Mark H. Sandler Endowed Art History Experience Award, Lily Hemmeter spent three weeks over the summer studying ancient architecture, art history, and archeology in Italy. The program, titled “In the Shadow of Vesuvius: Architectural Recording for Archeology,” was led by Professor Williams from the University of Maryland’s Architecture department. UMD students have been going to Castellammare di Stabia for years to study the Villa Arianna, and Lily was part of the final cohort to put the finishing touches on the ongoing research. She gained many technical skills such as learning to document both digitally and by hand before photographing and conducting LiDAR scans (laser measurements). She was also able to visit other canonical archaeological sites in the Bay of Naples region such as Pompeii and Oplonits. Lily is double majoring in Art History & Archaeology and Architecture.
