Cecilia Wichmann is Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). She is co-curator of the forthcoming 50-year career retrospective Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams, co-organized with the Seattle Art Museum, and collaborator with guest curator George Ciscle on Eyewinkers, Tumbleturds, and Candlebugs: The Art of Elizabeth Talford Scott, and the Elizabeth Talford Scott Community Celebration organized in partnership with MICA’s Exhibition Development Seminar and eight partner institutions across Baltimore City. Current exhibitions include Martha Jackson Jarvis: What the Trees Have Seen, co-curated with Jessica Bell Brown and Leila Grothe, and Histories Collide: Jackie Milad x Fred Wilson x Nekisha Durrett, co-curated with Dave Eassa. Cecilia has worked closely with Elle Pérez, Tschabalala Self, SHAN Wallace, Elissa Blount Moorhead and Bradford Young, Ellen Lesperance, Clifford Owens, Shinique Smith, Senga Nengudi, Ebony G. Patterson, and Stephen Towns. She recently launched the BMA Artist Interview initiative with BMA Director of Conservation Linda Owen to center artists’ voices in collection stewardship and care.

Cecilia's dissertation project is a monographic study of the work of Joyce J. Scott, engaging discourses of craft, performance, and memorial sculpture. The university awarded her the 2017-2018 Museum Fellowship and the 2017 John Dorsey Prize for Outstanding Curatorial Practice. Her 2015 master’s thesis, "Sound and Documentary in Cardiff and Miller’s Pandemonium," was featured on scalar.me. Cecilia began her museum career in Washington, DC at The Phillips Collection after earning her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art History and German with honors at the University of Toronto.

This essential new volume serves as a critical resource and details the richness and complexity of the work of Joyce J. Scott (b. 1948), beginning with an overview of the artist’s 50-year career—an interconnected, community-generating practice that embraces performance art, beaded necklaces and sculptures, wall hangings, and prints. Interviews with the artist by Leslie King Hammond and Valerie Cassel Oliver focus on Scott’s matrilineage and womanist ethos and on the genre-defying choreography of her career across disciplines. Six thematic essays by established and emerging scholars discuss the ancient and global reach of beads, including Yorùbá traditions; consider the utility of satire and performance in connection with the work of emerging Black artists; and explore the significance of geography, history, and place. Excerpts from foundational out-of-print texts and an illustrated chronology annotated by Scott appear alongside contributions by artists Sonya Clark, Oletha DeVane, Jeffrey Gibson, Kay Lawal-Muhammad, Malcolm Peacock, and William C. Rhodes III. Scott makes difficult subjects intimately felt, confronting histories of trauma through wearable art and exquisite sculpture. With humor and pathos, she twists menacing stereotypes into grotesque and tender retorts that spur conversation, making art a vehicle for learning, reflection, and healing.
