Freedmen's Bureau Transcribe-a-thon
An act of Congress on March 3, 1865 created the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands (the Freedmen’s Bureau). The records produced by the bureau are the richest source of information on the African American experience post-Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Most documents have been digitized, yet few have been transcribed. From these pages many stories can emerge, but without transcription, finding these stories can be difficult. Come and help uncover new knowledge about our Nation's past, and in so doing, answer the question - “What will we discover this time?”
On April 20th between 1 and 3 p.m., drop in for as little or as long as you like to transcribe records from the Freedmen's Bureau.
Familiarize yourself with the Freedmen's Bureau Papers and how to transcribe them. Sign up for an account at the Smithsonian Transcription Center at: transcription.si.edu/
